Review of Bersa Thunder High Capacity Pistol, Semi-Automatic, Single/Double Action, 9 Millimeter, 4.2 Inch Barrel, 17 Round Capacity, Matte Black Finish

By Chappy On 12/05/2008
I really liked this gun for a lot of reasons. I also disliked a few things. I bought mine in 2005 almost a year-and-a-half years after the AWB expired. Nonetheless, it came with one neutered 10-round mag and that was it. The package indicated it was manufactured after the ban as well. Apparently they wanted to clear out the old neutered mags before going with the full caps. Not good business practice IMO. Then a full cap mag was going to cost about $60 delivered and I always want at least two mags so not too happy about that and passed and sold the gun altogether. Other issues were the parkerized slide was the worst parkerized finish I have ever seen in terms of reliability. Holster it twice and it is down to bare metal. The recoil spring system was unbelievably weak. I could retract the slide with one hand manipulating the entire gun. I suppose this is good if you have but one hand but I like a recoil spring that is strong enough to reduce some of the recoil. The Bersa malfunctioned on mer at the range around the 120th shot in a marathon session. maybe I was fatigued I suppose but it gets rather fatiguing when there is practically no recoil spring tension to offset the recoil. Overall, I think Bersa is close to a real winner but still just too far away. Suggestions: 1) Include two full cap mags and if that affects your profit margin too much then charge more to begin with and compete with the other companies who almost ALL deliver two full mags with their guns now. 2) Put in a decent recoil spring for crying out loud. Mine had two springs forming a "system" and it was unbelievably weak. Never had a 9mm with such a weak flimsy spring. Could easily retract slide completely on pant leg using one hand. 3) Put a finish on that doesn't rub off as if it is just colored with chalk pencils. I really like the design. In fact, I really love the design and I think Bersa is a well enough known name that they need to turn up the QC a little bit and then they will have a great winner with this and many of their other designs. Until then though I am on the sidelines with them.
